Jim Drain

Drain uses patterns and bright colors to create his art. His work can be considered peaceful but also a little confusing. The way in which he creates patterns with such different colors is interestingly simple but yet difficult to create from my own thoughts.

Debra Hurd

I really liked the way in which Hurd uses color to create her paintings. My favorite painting is the piano, specially because the different use of color is so complex but yet so literal. The colors are soft and even thought there are some dark colors, the way she incorporates her colors together make her paintings peaceful.

Lucien Den Arend (HW 4)

I love the simplicity this artist uses within his work. Arend uses mass and line as two of his key elements in his creations. The way in which he uses balancing in different ways and combines it with volume, mass and line is very interesting. Most of his work has a lot of edging that produces line bounding...either with the bounding of surface areas or with another piece of art that will become part of the bigger picture. He also uses planes that create a captivating texture that makes the art work more intriguing.

Isabelle de Borchgrave

I found Borchgrave's work very interesting. Her use of paper to create costumes is not only fascinating but also overly creative. Paper is a material I would probably never think to use to make such a thing as a costume but Borchgrave's work completely changed the use of materials. It is quite amazing to see how something so light and thin can be manipulated into creating such beautiful creations. I simply love it.

Complete.

A little more detail...

 I had forgotten the brain!!

More details to this body wouldn't hurt.

Little lace dress...

Striped scarf...

Liver and intestines...

Colorful combinations go a long way!

This beauty of a pillow had many things that came useful to this project.

The smaller details came with bigger use...

What would a body be without it's lungs to breath, its heart to beat and its trachea to hold it all together?

And of course...we cannot live without the blood that runs through our veins.

It all began with this cute thing....

It might have been a little heartless to take this teddy bear appart but I was gentle in doing so.

I decided to only open the back side of the bear and take the containings out of it.

My little "Virgen"

I have to admit after searching for materials to use for this first project, I realized how much stuff we really have around my home. Within all the things I found, this was the most important one. As I grew up, if there was one thing that I always carried with me in my memories is this sculpture of the Virgin Mary. About 10 years ago I traveled to Mexico for my summer vacation and ended up coming home with this. I remember seeing this at the flea market and thinking, “Que bonita (how beautiful)”. Little did I know, such a small thing would become so sacred to me. For years, this sculpture became my sister and I’s protector at nights. Instead of having a night light, this is what helped me sleep. I remember watching horror movies and not being able to sleep. Even though it was still scary, knowing Virgin Mary would watch over me and having her image around would always send me to sleep. Until this day, this sculpture sits in my room.  A different room from 10 years ago with a different sister to share it with, but plenty of old and wonderful memories.

Project 1: Soft Objects

I chose this scarf because I am not regularly a fan of striped patterns but I love the colors in this object!

This dress is fascinatingly beautiful. It is from an old quinceanera doll. Should be interesting to take it apart and make something completely different with it!

The knitting of this object is amazing, I just loved it!

I love these things! I'll have fun figuring out what to do with this thing after taking it apart!

Honestly, I am more interested in what is inside this teddy bear then outside of it. Maybe I'll reconstruct a whole new bear!

This pillow is precious, specially because of the material they used to make it. The pattern inspires me to make something such as this, we'll see if it works!
